"But,Pollyanna,Pollyanna,"remonstratedMissPolly. "Idon’t—"ButPollyannawasalreadyhalfwaytothekitchen,calling:
"Nancy,Nancy,justseethisdearlittlekittythatAuntPollyisgoingtobringupalongwithme!" AndAuntPolly,inthesittingroom—whoabhorredcats—fellbackinherchairwithagaspofdismay,powerlesstoremonstrate.
Thenextdayitwasadog,evendirtierandmoreforlorn,perhaps,thanwasthekitten; andagainMissPolly,toherdumfoundedamazement,foundherselffiguringasakindprotectorandanangelofmercy—arolethatPollyannasounhesitatinglythrustuponherasamatterofcourse,thatthewoman—whoabhorreddogsevenmorethanshedidcats,ifpossible—foundherselfasbefore,powerlesstoremonstrate.
