Pollyanna pays a visit

           ItwasnotlongbeforelifeattheHarringtonhomesteadsettledintosomethinglikeorder—thoughnotexactlytheorderthatMissPollyhadatfirstprescribed. Pollyannasewed,practised,readaloud,andstudiedcookinginthekitchen,itistrue; butshedidnotgivetoanyofthesethingsquitesomuchtimeashadfirstbeenplanned. Shehadmoretime,also,to"justlive,"assheexpressedit,foralmostallofeveryafternoonfromtwountilsixo’clockwasherstodowithassheliked—providedshedidnot"like"todocertainthingsalreadyprohibitedbyAuntPolly. 

           Itisaquestion,perhaps,whetherallthisleisuretimewasgiventothechildasarelieftoPollyannafromwork—orasarelieftoAuntPollyfromPollyanna. Certainly,asthosefirstJulydayspassed,MissPollyfoundoccasionmanytimestoejaculate"Whatanextraordinarychild!"andcertainlythereadingandsewinglessonsfoundherattheirconclusioneachdaysomewhatdazedandwhollyexhausted. 

           Nancy,inthekitchen,faredbetter. Shewasnotdazednorexhausted. WednesdaysandSaturdayscametobe,indeed,red-letterdaystoher. 

           TherewerenochildrenintheimmediateneighborhoodoftheHarringtonhomesteadforPollyannatoplaywith. Thehouseitselfwasontheoutskirtsofthevillage,andthoughtherewereotherhousesnotfaraway,theydidnotchancetocontainanyboysorgirlsnearPollyanna’sage. This,however,didnotseemtodisturbPollyannaintheleast.
