MissPollyturnedherheadfromsidetoside. Herbreathwascominginlittleuneven,rapidgasps.Jimmy,watchingherwithanxiouseyes,thoughtshewasgoingtocry. Butshedidnotcry. Afteraminuteshesaidbrokenly:
"Yes—I’lllet—Dr.Chilton—seeher. Nowrunhome,Jimmy—quick! I’vegottospeaktoDr.Warren. He’sup-stairsnow. Isawhimdriveinafewminutesago."
AlittlelaterDr.Warrenwassurprisedtomeetanagitated,flushed-facedMissPollyinthehall. Hewasstillmoresurprisedtoheartheladysay,alittlebreathlessly:
"Dr.Warren,youaskedmeoncetoallowDr.Chiltontobecalledinconsultation,and—Irefused. SincethenIhavereconsidered. IverymuchdesirethatyouSHOULDcallinDr.Chilton. Willyounotaskhimatonce—please? Thankyou."
