An Accident

           "Eh? Well,Idon’tknow,Idon’tknow,"moanedNancy,withashakeofherheadassheturnedaway. "SeemsasifIjestcouldn’tstandittillthatdoctorgitsouto’there. IwishIhadawashin’terdothebiggestwashin’Ieversee,Ido,Ido!"shewailed,wringingherhandshelplessly. Evenafterthedoctorwasgone,however,thereseemedtobelittlethatNancycouldtellMr.Tom. Thereappearedtobenobonesbroken,andthecutwasofslightconsequence; butthedoctorhadlookedverygrave,hadshakenhisheadslowly,andhadsaidthattimealonecouldtell. Afterhehadgone,MissPollyhadshownafaceevenwhiterandmoredrawnlookingthanbefore. Thepatienthadnotfullyrecoveredconsciousness,butatpresentsheseemedtoberestingascomfortablyascouldbeexpected. Atrainednursehadbeensentfor,andwouldcomethatnight. Thatwasall. AndNancyturnedsobbingly,andwentbacktoherkitchen. 

           ItwassometimeduringthenextforenoonthatPollyannaopenedconsciouseyesandrealizedwhereshewas. 

           "Why,AuntPolly,what’sthematter? Isn’titdaytime? Whydon’tIgetup?"shecried. "Why,AuntPolly,Ican’tgetup,"shemoaned,fallingbackonthepillow,afteranineffectualattempttoliftherself. 

           "No,dear,Iwouldn’ttryjustyet,"soothedherauntquickly,butveryquietly. 

           "Butwhatisthematter? Whycan’tIgetup?" 

           MissPolly’seyesaskedanagonizedquestionofthewhite-cappedyoungwomanstandinginthewindow,outoftherangeofPollyanna’seyes. 

           Theyoungwomannodded. 

           "Tellher,"thelipssaid. 

           MissPollyclearedherthroat,andtriedtoswallowthelumpthatwouldscarcelyletherspeak. 

           "Youwerehurt,dear,bytheautomobilelastnight. Butnevermindthatnow. Auntiewantsyoutorestandgotosleepagain."
