Thebook-linedwallsandthecrimsoncurtainswerethesame; buttherewasnolitteronthefloor,nountidinessonthedesk,andnotsomuchasagrainofdustinsight. Thetelephonecardhunginitsproperplace,andthebrassandironshadbeenpolished. Oneofthemysteriousdoorswasopen,anditwastowardthisthatthemaidledtheway. AmomentlaterPollyannafoundherselfinasumptuouslyfurnishedbedroomwhilethemaidwassayinginafrightenedvoice:
"Ifyouplease,sir,here—here’salittlegirlwithsomejelly. ThedoctorsaidIwasto—tobringherin."
ThenextmomentPollyannafoundherselfalonewithaverycross-lookingmanlyingflatonhisbackinbed.
"Seehere,didn’tIsay—"begananangryvoice. "Oh,it’syou!"itbrokeoffnotverygraciously,asPollyannaadvancedtowardthebed.
"Yes,sir,"smiledPollyanna. "Oh,I’msogladtheyletmein! Yousee,atfirstthelady‘mosttookmyjelly,andIwassoafraidIwasn’tgoingtoseeyouatall. Thenthedoctorcame,andhesaidImight. Wasn’thelovelytoletmeseeyou?"
Inspiteofhimselftheman’slipstwitchedintoasmile; butallhesaidwas"Humph!"
"AndI’vebroughtyousomejelly,"resumedPollyanna;"—calf’s-foot. Ihopeyoulikeit?" Therewasarisinginflectioninhervoice.
"Neverateit. "Thefleetingsmilehadgone,andthescowlhadcomebacktotheman’sface.
