Theymakenobeautifulthings,buttheymakemanycleverones.Theycantunnelandmineaswellasanybutthemostskilleddwarves,whentheytakethetrouble,thoughtheyareusuallyuntidyanddirty.Hammers,axes,swords,daggers,pickaxes,tongs,andalsoinstrumentsoftorture,theymakeverywell,orgetotherpeopletomaketotheirdesign,prisonersandslavesthathavetoworktilltheydieforwantofairandlight.Itisnotunlikelythattheyinventedsomeofthemachinesthathavesincetroubledtheworld,especiallytheingeniousdevicesforkillinglargenumbersofpeopleatonce,forwheelsandenginesandexplosionsalwaysdelightedthem,andalsonotworkingwiththeirownhandsmorethantheycouldhelp;butinthosedaysandthosewildpartstheyhadnotadvanced(asitiscalled)sofar.Theydidnothatedwarvesespecially,nomorethantheyhatedeverybodyandeverything,andparticularlytheorderlyandprosperous;insomepartswickeddwarveshadevenmadeallianceswiththem.ButtheyhadaspecialgrudgeagainstThorin’speople,becauseofthewarwhichyouhaveheardmentioned,butwhichdoesnotcomeintothistale;andanywaygoblinsdon’tcarewhotheycatch,aslongasitisdonesmartandsecret,andtheprisonersarenotabletodefendthemselves.
