Itsoundedtrulyterrifying.Thewallsechoedtotheclap,snap!andthecrush,smash!andtotheuglylaughteroftheirho,ho!mylad!Thegeneralmeaningofthesongwasonlytooplain;fornowthegoblinstookoutwhipsandwhippedthemwithaswish,smack!,andsetthemrunningasfastastheycouldinfrontofthem;andmorethanoneofthedwarveswerealreadyyammeringandbleatinglikeanything,whentheystumbledintoabigcavern.Itwaslitbyagreatredfireinthemiddle,andbytorchesalongthewalls,anditwasfullofgoblins.Theyalllaughedandstampedandclappedtheirhands,whenthedwarves(withpoorlittleBilboatthebackandnearesttothewhips)camerunningin,whilethegoblin-driverswhoopedandcrackedtheirwhipsbehind.Theponieswerealreadytherehuddledinacorner;andtherewereallthebaggagesandpackageslyingbrokenopen,andbeingrummagedbygoblins,andsmeltbygoblins,andfingeredbygoblins,andquarreledoverbygoblins.
Iamafraidthatwasthelasttheyeversawofthoseexcellentlittleponies,includingajollysturdylittlewhitefellowthatElrondhadlenttoGandalf,sincehishorsewasnotsuitableforthemountain-paths.Forgoblinseathorsesandponiesanddonkeys(andothermuchmoredreadfulthings),andtheyarealwayshungry.Justnowhowevertheprisonerswerethinkingonlyofthemselves.ThegoblinschainedtheirhandsbehindtheirbacksandlinkedthemalltogetherinalineanddraggedthemtothefarendofthecavernwithlittleBilbotuggingattheendoftherow.
Thereintheshadowsonalargeflatstonesatatremendousgoblinwithahugehead,andarmedgoblinswerestandingroundhimcarryingtheaxesandthebentswordsthattheyuse.Nowgoblinsarecruel,wicked,andbad-hearted.
