"Verywell!We’llsee!NotreasurewillcomebackthroughMirkwoodwithoutmyhavingsomethingtosayinthematter.ButIexpecttheywillallcometoabadend,andservethemright!"HeatanyratedidnotbelieveindwarvesfightingandkillingdragonslikeSmaug,andhestronglysuspectedattemptedburglaryorsomethinglikeitwhichshowshewasawiseelfandwiserthanthemenofthetown,thoughnotquiteright,asweshallseeintheend.HesentouthisspiesabouttheshoresofthelakeandasfarnorthwardtowardstheMountainsastheywouldgo,andwaited.AttheendofafortnightThorinbegantothinkofdeparture.Whiletheenthusiasmstilllastedinthetownwasthetimetogethelp.Itwouldnotdotoleteverythingcooldownwithdelay.SohespoketotheMasterandhiscouncillorsandsaidthatsoonheandhiscompanymustgoontowardstheMountain.
ThenforthefirsttimetheMasterwassurprisedandalittlefrightened;andhewonderedifThorinwasafterallreallyadescendantoftheoldkings.HehadneverthoughtthatthedwarveswouldactuallydaretoapproachSmaug,butbelievedtheywerefraudswhowouldsoonerorlaterbediscoveredandbeturnedout.Hewaswrong
