Theelvishfolkwerepassingbowlsfromhandtohandandacrossthefires,andsomewereharpingandmanyweresinging.Theirgloaminghairwastwinedwithflowers;greenandwhitegemsglintedontheircollarsandtheirbelts;andtheirfacesandtheirsongswerefilledwithmirth.Loudandclearandfairwerethosesongs,andoutsteppedThorinintotheirmidst.
Deadsilencefellinthemiddleofaword.Outwentalllight.Thefiresleapedupinblacksmokes.Ashesandcinderswereintheeyesofthedwarves,andthewoodwasfilledagainwiththeirclamourandtheircries.Bilbofoundhimselfrunningroundandround(ashethought)andcallingandcalling:
"Dori,Nori,Ori,Oin,Gloin,Fili,Kili,Bombur,Bifur,Bofur,Dwalin,Balin,ThorinOakenshield,"whilepeoplehecouldnotseeorfeelweredoingthesameallroundhim(withanoccasional"Bilbo!"thrownin).Butthecriesoftheothersgotsteadilyfurtherandfainter,andthoughafterawhileitseemedtohimtheychangedtoyellsandcriesforhelpinthefardistance,allnoiseatlastdiedrightaway,andhewasleftaloneincompletesilenceanddarkness.Thatwasoneofhismostmiserablemoments.Buthesoonmadeuphismindthatitwasnogoodtryingtodoanythingtilldaycamewithsomelittlelight,andquiteuselesstogoblunderingabouttiringhimselfoutwithnohopeofanybreakfasttorevivehim.Sohesathimselfdownwithhisbacktoatree,andnotforthelasttimefelltothinkingofhisfar-distanthobbit-holewithitsbeautifulpantries.Hewasdeepinthoughtsofbaconandeggsandtoastandbutterwhenhefeltsomethingtouchhim.Somethinglikeastrongstickystringwasagainsthislefthand,andwhenhetriedtomovehefoundthathislegswerealreadywrappedinthesamestuff,sothatwhenhegotuphefellover.
Thenthegreatspider,whohadbeenbusytyinghimupwhilehedozed,camefrombehindhimandcameathim.
