Afterblunderingfranticallyinthegloom,fallingoverlogs,bumpingcrashintotrees,andshoutingandcallingtilltheymusthavewakedeverythingintheforestformiles,atlasttheymanagedtogatherthemselvesinabundleandcountthemselvesbytouch.Bythattimetheyhad,ofcourse,quiteforgotteninwhatdirectionthepathlay,andtheywereallhopelesslylost,atleasttillmorning.
Therewasnothingforitbuttosettledownforthenightwheretheywere;theydidnotevendaretosearchonthegroundforscrapsoffoodforfearofbecomingseparatedagain.Buttheyhadnotbeenlyinglong,andBilbowasonlyjustgettingdrowsy,whenDori,whoseturnitwastowatchfirst,saidinaloudwhisper:
"Thelightsarecomingoutagainoverthere,andtherearemorethaneverofthem."
Uptheyalljumped.There,sureenough,notfarawaywerescoresoftwinklinglights,andtheyheardthevoicesandthelaughterquiteplainly.Theycreptslowlytowardsthem,inasingleline,eachtouchingthebackoftheoneinfront.WhentheygotnearThorinsaid:"Norushingforwardthistime!NooneistostirfromhidingtillIsay.IshallsendMr.Bagginsalonefirsttotalktothem.Theywon’tbefrightenedofhim-(’Whataboutmeofthem?’thoughtBilbo)-andanywayIhopetheywon’tdoanythingnastytohim."WhentheygottotheedgeofthecircleoflightstheypushedBilbosuddenlyfrombehind.Beforehehadtimetosliponhisring,hestumbledforwardintothefullblazeofthefireandtorches.Itwasnogood.Outwentallthelightsagainandcompletedarknessfell.Ifithadbeendifficultcollectingthemselvesbefore,itwasfarworsethistime.Andtheysimplycouldnotfindthehobbit.
