"Itlooksasifmydreamswerecomingtrue,"gaspedBomburpuffingupbehind.Hewantedtorushstraightoffintothewoodafterthelights.ButtheothersrememberedonlytoowellthewarningsofthewizardandofBeorn."Afeastwouldbenogood,ifwenevergotbackalivefromit,"saidThorin."Butwithoutafeastweshan’tremainalivemuchlongeranyway,"saidBombur,andBilboheartilyagreedwithhim.Theyarguedaboutitbackwardsandforwardsforalongwhile,untiltheyagreedatlengthtosendoutacoupleofspies,tocreepnearthelightsandfindoutmoreaboutthem.Butthentheycouldnotagreeonwhowastobesent:nooneseemedanxioustorunthechanceofbeinglostandneverfindinghisfriendsagain.Intheend,inspiteofwarnings,hungerdecidedthem,becauseBomburkeptondescribingallthegoodthingsthatwerebeingeaten,accordingtohisdream,inthewoodlandfeast;sotheyallleftthepathandplungedintotheforesttogether.Afteragooddealofcreepingandcrawlingtheypeeredroundthetrunksandlookedintoaclearingwheresometreeshadbeenfelledandthegroundlevelled.Thereweremanypeoplethere,elvish-lookingfolk,alldressedingreenandbrownandsittingonsawnringsofthefelledtreesinagreatcircle.Therewasafireintheirmidstandthereweretorchesfastenedtosomeofthetreesroundabout;butmostsplendidsightofall:theywereeatinganddrinkingandlaughingmerrily.
Thesmelloftheroastmeatswassoenchantingthat,withoutwaitingtoconsultoneanother,everyoneofthemgotupandscrambledforwardsintotheringwiththeoneideaofbeggingforsomefood.Nosoonerhadthefirststeppedintotheclearingthanallthelightswentoutasifbymagic.
Somebodykickedthefireanditwentupinrocketsofglitteringsparksandvanished.Theywerelostinacompletelylightlessdarkandtheycouldnotevenfindoneanother,notforalongtimeatanyrate.
