Butwhentheyroastedit,itprovedhorribletotaste,andtheyshotnomoresquirrels.Theywerethirstytoo,fortheyhadnonetoomuchwater,andinallthetimetheyhadseenneitherspringnorstream.Thiswastheirstatewhenonedaytheyfoundtheirpathblockedbyarunningwater.Itflowedfastandstrongbutnotverywiderightacrosstheway,anditwasblack,orlookeditinthegloom.ItwaswellthatBeornhadwarnedthemagainstit,ortheywouldhavedrunkfromit,whateveritscolour,andfilledsomeoftheiremptiedskinsatitsbank.Asitwastheyonlythoughtofhowtocrossitwithoutwettingthemselvesinitswater.Therehadbeenabridgeofwoodacross,butithadrottedandfallenleavingonlythebrokenpostsnearthebank.Bilbokneelingonthebrinkandpeeringforwardcried:"Thereisaboatagainstthefarbank!Nowwhycouldn’tithavebeenthisside!""Howfarawaydoyouthinkitis?"askedThorin,forbynowtheyknewBilbohadthesharpesteyesamongthem.
