Eventhedwarvesfeltit,whowereusedtotunnelling,andlivedattimesforlongwhileswithoutthelightofthesun;butthehobbit,wholikedholestomakeahouseinbutnottospendsummerdaysin,felthewasbeingslowlysuffocated.Thenightsweretheworst.Itthenbecamepitch-dark-notwhatyoucallpitch-dark,butreallypitch;soblackthatyoureallycouldseenothing.Bilbotriedflappinghishandinfrontofhisnose,buthecouldnotseeitatall.Well,perhapsitisnottruetosaythattheycouldseenothing:theycouldseeeyes.Theysleptallcloselyhuddledtogether,andtookitinturnstowatch;andwhenitwasBilbo’sturnhewouldseegleamsinthedarknessroundthem,andsometimespairsofyelloworredorgreeneyeswouldstareathimfromalittledistance,andthenslowlyfadeanddisappearandslowlyshineoutagaininanotherplace.Andsometimestheywouldgleamdownfromthebranchesjustabovehim;andthatwasmostterrifying.Buttheeyesthathelikedtheleastwerehorriblepalebulboussortofeyes."Insecteyes"hethought,"notanimaleyes,onlytheyaremuchtoobig."Althoughitwasnotyetverycold,theytriedlightingwatch-firesatnight,buttheysoongavethatup.Itseemedtobringhundredsandhundredsofeyesallroundthem,thoughthecreatures,whatevertheywere,werecarefulnevertolettheirbodiesshowinthelittleflickeroftheflames.Worsestillitbroughtthousandsofdark-greyandblackmoths,somenearlyasbigasyourhand,flappingandwhirringroundtheirears.Theycouldnotstandthat,northehugebats,blackasatop-hat,either;sotheygaveupfiresandsatatnightanddozedintheenormousuncannydarkness.Allthiswentonforwhatseemedtothehobbitagesuponages;andhewasalwayshungry,fortheywereextremelycarefulwiththeirprovisions.Evenso,asdaysfolloweddays,andstilltheforestseemedjustthesame,theybegantogetanxious.Thefoodwouldnotlastforever:itwasinfactalreadybeginningtogetlow.Theytriedshootingatthesquirrels,andtheywastedmanyarrowsbeforetheymanagedtobringonedownonthepath.
