Thelongeronestaysherethemoredoesthespiritofthemoorsinkintoone’ssoul,itsvastness,andalsoitsgrimcharm. WhenyouareonceoutuponitsbosomyouhaveleftalltracesofmodernEnglandbehindyou,butontheotherhandyouareconsciouseverywhereofthehomesandtheworkoftheprehistoricpeople. Onallsidesofyouasyouwalkarethehousesoftheseforgottenfolk,withtheirgravesandthehugemonolithswhicharesupposedtohavemarkedtheirtemples. Asyoulookattheirgraystonehutsagainstthescarredhill-sidesyouleaveyourownagebehindyou, andifyouweretoseeaskin-clad,hairymancrawloutfromthelowdoorfittingaflint-tippedarrowontothestringofhisbow, youwouldfeelthathispresencetherewasmorenaturalthanyourown. Thestrangethingisthattheyshouldhavelivedsothicklyonwhatmustalwayshavebeenmostunfruitfulsoil. Iamnoantiquarian,butIcouldimaginethattheyweresomeunwarlikeandharriedracewhowereforcedtoacceptthatwhichnoneotherwouldoccupy.
Allthis,however,isforeigntothemissiononwhichyousentmeandwillprobablybeveryuninterestingtoyourseverelypracticalmind. Icanstillrememberyourcompleteindifferenceastowhetherthesunmovedroundtheearthortheearthroundthesun. Letme,therefore,returntothefactsconcerningSirHenryBaskerville.
