IstartthenfromthedaywhichsucceededthatuponwhichIhadestablishedtwofactsofgreatimportance, theonethatMrs.LauraLyonsofCoombeTraceyhadwrittentoSirCharlesBaskervilleandmadeanappointmentwithhimattheveryplaceandhourthathemethisdeath, theotherthatthelurkingmanuponthemoorwastobefoundamongthestonehutsuponthehill-side. WiththesetwofactsinmypossessionIfeltthateithermyintelligenceormycouragemustbedeficientifIcouldnotthrowsomefurtherlightuponthesedarkplaces.

Amaidshowedmeinwithoutceremony,andasIenteredthesitting-roomalady,whowassittingbeforeaRemingtontypewriter, sprangupwithapleasantsmileofwelcome.
