DowninthekitchenMrs.Brillwasreadingthepaperwithherspectaclesperchedonhernose.RobertsonAywassittinginthegardenbusilydoingnothing.Mrs.Bankswasonthedrawing-roomsofawithherfeetup.Andthehousestoodveryquietlyaroundthemall,dreamingitsowndreams,orthinkingperhaps.
UpstairsinthenurseryMaryPoppinswasairingtheclothesbythefire,andthesunlightpouredinatthewindow,flickeringonthewhitewalls,dancingoverthecotswherethebabieswerelying.
"Isay,moveover!You’rerightinmyeyes,"saidJohninaloudvoice.
"Sorry!"saidthesunlight."ButIcan’thelpit.I’vegottogetacrossthisroomsomehow.Ordersisorders.ImustmovefromEasttoWestinadayandmywayliesthroughthisNursery.Sorry!Shutyoureyesandyouwon’tnoticeme."
Thegoldshaftofsunlightlengthenedacrosstheroom.ItwasobviouslymovingasquicklyasitcouldinordertoobligeJohn.
"Howsoft,howsweetyouare!Iloveyou,"saidBarbara,holdingoutherhandstoitsshiningwarmth.
"Goodgirl,"saidthesunlightapprovingly,andmovedupoverhercheeksandintoherhairwithalight,caressingmovement."Doyoulikethefeelofme?"itsaid,asthoughitlovedbeingpraised.
