           AtthatMrs.Corrydrewherselfuptoherfullheightandregardedhergiganticdaughtersfuriously.Thenshesaidinasoft,fierce,terrifyingvoice:

           "Justgoingto?Oh,indeed!Thatisveryinteresting.Andwho,mayIask,Annie,gaveyoupermissiontogiveawaymygingerbread—?"

           "Nobody,Mother.AndIdidn’tgiveitaway.Ionlythought—"

           "Youonlythought!Thatisverykindofyou.ButIwillthankyounottothink.Icandoallthethinkingthatisnecessaryhere!"saidMrs.Corryinhersoft,terriblevoice.Thensheburstintoaharshcackleoflaughter.

           "Lookather!Justlookather!Cowardy-custard!Cry-baby!"sheshrieked,pointingherknottyfingeratherdaughter.

           JaneandMichaelturnedandsawalargetearcoursingdownMissAnnie’shuge,sadface,buttheydidnotliketosayanything,for,inspiteofhertininess,Mrs.Corrymadethemfeelrathersmallandfrightened.ButassoonasMrs.CorrylookedtheotherwayJaneseizedtheopportunitytoofferMissAnnieherhandkerchief.Thehugetearcompletelydrenchedit,andMissAnnie,withagratefullook,wrungitoutbeforeshereturnedittoJane.

           "Andyou,Fanniedidyouthink,too,Iwonder?"Thehighlittlevoicewasnowdirectedattheotherdaughter.

           "No,Mother,"saidMissFannietrembling.

           "Humph!Justaswellforyou!Openthatcase!"

           Withfrightened,fumblingfingers,MissFannieopenedtheglasscase.

           "Now,mydarlings,"saidMrs.Corryinquiteadifferentvoice.
