           Andmanyatimehewishedhe’dneverhadafather,noragrandfather,noragreat-grandfather,ifMissLarkwasgoingtomakesuchafussofit.

           ItwasthisdesireofhistobeacommondogthatmadeAndrewchoosecommondogsforhisfriends.Andwheneverhegotthechance,hewouldrundowntothefrontgateandsittherewatchingforthem,sothathecouldexchangeafewcommonremarks.ButMissLark,whenshediscoveredhim,wouldbesuretocallout:

           "Andrew,Andrew,comein,mydarling!Comeawayfromthosedreadfulstreetarabs!"

           AndofcourseAndrewwouldhavetocomein,orMissLarkwouldshamehimbycomingoutandbringinghimin.AndAndrewwouldblushandhurryupthestepssothathisfriendsshouldnothearhercallinghimherPrecious,herJoy,herLittleLumpofSugar.

           Andrew’smostspecialfriendwasmorethancommon,hewasaByword.HewashalfanAiredaleandhalfaRetrieverandtheworsthalfofboth.Whenevertherewasafightintheroadhewouldbesuretobeinthethickofit;hewasalwaysgettingintotroublewiththePostmanorthePoliceman,andtherewasnothinghelovedbetterthansniffingaboutindrainsorgarbagetins.Hewas,infact,thetalkofthewholestreet,andmorethanonepersonhadbeenheardtosaythankfullythattheyweregladhewasnottheirdog.

           ButAndrewlovedhimandwascontinuallyonthewatchforhim.SometimestheyhadonlytimetoexchangeasniffinthePark,butonluckieroccasionsthoughthesewereveryraretheywouldhavelongtalksatthegate.
