           Now,theCitywasaplacewhereMr.BankswenteverydayexceptSundays,ofcourse,andBankHolidaysandwhilehewastherehesatonalargechairinfrontofalargedeskandmademoney.Alldaylongheworked,cuttingoutpenniesandshillingsandhalf-crownsandthreepenny-bits.Andhebroughtthemhomewithhiminhislittleblackbag.SometimeshewouldgivesometoJaneandMichaelfortheirmoney-boxes,andwhenhecouldn’tspareanyhewouldsay,"TheBankisbroken,"andtheywouldknowhehadn’tmademuchmoneythatday.

           Well,Mr.Bankswentoffwithhisblackbag,andMrs.Bankswentintothedrawing-roomandsattherealldaylongwritingletterstothepapersandbeggingthemtosendsomeNanniestoheratonceasshewaswaiting;andupstairsintheNursery,JaneandMichaelwatchedatthewindowandwonderedwhowouldcome.TheyweregladKatieNannahadgone,fortheyhadneverlikedher.Shewasoldandfatandsmeltofbarley-water.Anything,theythought,wouldbebetterthanKatieNannaifnotmuchbetter.

           WhentheafternoonbegantodieawaybehindthePark,Mrs.BrillandEllencametogivethemtheirsupperandtobaththeTwins.AndaftersupperJaneandMichaelsatatthewindowwatchingforMr.
