"Ithoughtso,"saidtheHamadryad,smiling."Youmustbeoff,mydear.They’llbewaitingforyoutotakeyourplaceinthecentre.Farewell,tillyournextBirthday."AndheraisedhimselfashehaddonebeforeandlightlysalutedMaryPoppinsonbothcheeks.
"Hurryaway!"saidtheHamadryad."Iwilltakecareofyouryoungfriends."
JaneandMichaelfelttheBrownBearmovingunderthemandtheystoodup.PasttheirfeettheycouldfeelallthesnakesslippingandwrithingastheyhurriedfromtheSnakeHouse.MaryPoppinsbowedtowardstheHamadryadveryceremoniously,andwithoutabackwardglanceatthechildrenwentrunningtowardsthehugegreensquareinthecentreoftheZoo.
"Youmayleaveus,"saidtheHamadryadtotheBrownBearwho,afterbowinghumbly,ranoffwithhiscapinhishandtowherealltheotheranimalswerecongregatingroundMaryPoppins.
"Willyougowithme?"saidtheHamadryadkindlytoJaneandMichael.
