AmongothersoldFletcherremembersseeinghim,andindeedtheoldgentlemanwassostruckbyhispeculiaragitationthatheinadvertentlyallowedaquantityofwhitewashtorundownthebrushintothesleeveofhiscoatwhileregardinghim.
Thisstranger,totheperceptionsoftheproprietorofthecocoanutshy,appearedtobetalkingtohimself,andMr.Huxterremarkedthesamething. Finallyhemarchedupthesteps,andwasseenbyMr.Huxtertoturntotheleftandopenthedooroftheparlour. Mr.Huxterheardvoicesfromwithintheroomandfromthebarapprisingthemanofhiserror.
