Emergingintothehill-road,Kempnaturallytookthedownwarddirection,andsoitwashecametoruninhisownpersontheveryracehehadwatchedwithsuchacriticaleyefromthebelvederestudyonlyfourdaysago. Heranitwell,foramanoutoftraining,andthoughhisfacewaswhiteandwet,hiswitswerecooltothelast. Heranwithwidestrides,andwhereverapatchofroughgroundintervened,wherevertherecameapatchofrawflints,orabitofbrokenglassshonedazzling,hecrosseditandleftthebareinvisiblefeetthatfollowedtotakewhatlinetheywould.
ForthefirsttimeinhislifeKempdiscoveredthatthehill-roadwasindescribablyvastanddesolate,andthatthebeginningsofthetownfarbelowatthehillfootwerestrangelyremote. Neverhadtherebeenaslowerormorepainfulmethodofprogressionthanrunning.
