Theirgoingwasveryslow.Topreventtheirgettingseparatedandwanderingindifferentdirectionstheywentinfile,withFrodoleading.Samwasbehindhim,andafterhimcamePippin,andthenMerry.Thevalleyseemedtostretchonendlessly.SuddenlyFrodosawahopefulsign.Oneithersideaheadadarknessbegantoloomthroughthemist;andheguessedthattheywereatlastapproachingthegapinthehills,thenorth-gateoftheBarrow-downs.Iftheycouldpassthat,theywouldbefree.
‘Comeon!Followme!’hecalledbackoverhisshoulder,andhehurriedforward.Buthishopesoonchangedtobewildermentandalarm.Thedarkpatchesgrewdarker,buttheyshrank;andsuddenlyhesaw,toweringominousbeforehimandleaningslightlytowardsoneanotherlikethepillarsofaheadlessdoor,twohugestandingstones.
