Ithadhugeirongatesleadingintoit, andahighwallsurroundingit, andsmokebelchingfromitschimneys, andstrangewhizzingsoundscomingfromdeepinsideit. Andoutsidethewalls,forhalfamilearoundineverydirection, theairwasscentedwiththeheavyrichsmellofmeltingchocolate!
Twiceaday,onhiswaytoandfromschool, littleCharlieBuckethadtowalkrightpastthegatesofthefactory. Andeverytimehewentby,hewouldbegintowalkvery,veryslowly, andhewouldholdhisnosehighintheair andtakelongdeepsniffsofthegorgeouschocolateysmellallaroundhim.
Oh,howhelovedthatsmell!

Intheevenings, afterhehadfinishedhissupperofwaterycabbagesoup, Charliealwayswentintotheroomofhisfourgrandparentstolistentotheirstories, andthenafterwardstosaygoodnight.
