           When,afterweeksandweeksofcautiousdrivingofscatteredelephantsacrossthehills,thefortyorfiftywildmonstersweredrivenintothelaststockade,andthebigdropgate,madeoftreetrunkslashedtogether,jarreddownbehindthem,KalaNag,atthewordofcommand,wouldgointothatflaring,trumpetingpandemonium(generallyatnight,whentheflickerofthetorchesmadeitdifficulttojudgedistances),and,pickingoutthebiggestandwildesttuskerofthemob,wouldhammerhimandhustlehimintoquietwhilethemenonthebacksoftheotherelephantsropedandtiedthesmallerones.

           TherewasnothinginthewayoffightingthatKalaNag,theoldwiseBlackSnake,didnotknow,forhehadstoodupmorethanonceinhistimetothechargeofthewoundedtiger,and,curlinguphissofttrunktobeoutofharm’sway,hadknockedthespringingbrutesidewaysinmid-airwithaquicksicklecutofhishead,thathehadinventedallbyhimself;hadknockedhimover,andkneeleduponhimwithhishugekneestillthelifewentoutwithagaspandahowl,andtherewasonlyafluffystripedthingonthegroundforKalaNagtopullbythetail.
