TheninchbyinchoutofthegrassroseuptheheadandspreadhoodofNag,thebigblackcobra,andhewasfivefeetlongfromtonguetotail.Whenhehadliftedone-thirdofhimselfclearoftheground,hestayedbalancingtoandfroexactlyasadandeliontuftbalancesinthewind,andhelookedatRikki-tikkiwiththewickedsnake’seyesthatneverchangetheirexpression,whateverthesnakemaybethinkingof.
"WhoisNag?"saidhe."IamNag.ThegreatGodBrahmputhismarkuponallourpeople,whenthefirstcobraspreadhishoodtokeepthesunoffBrahmasheslept.Look,andbeafraid!"
