UncleVernonwaiteduntilPierswassafelyoutofthehousebeforestartingonHarry. Hewassoangryhecouldhardlyspeak. Hemanagedtosay, "Go—cupboard—stay—nomeals," beforehecollapsedintoachair, andAuntPetuniahadtorunandgethimalargebrandy.
Harrylayinhisdarkcupboardmuchlater,wishinghehadawatch. Hedidn’tknowwhattimeitwasandhecouldn’tbesuretheDursleyswereasleepyet. Untiltheywere,hecouldn’trisksneakingtothekitchenforsomefood.
He’dlivedwiththeDursleysalmosttenyears, tenmiserableyears,aslongashecouldremember,eversincehe’dbeenababy andhisparentshaddiedinthatcarcrash. Hecouldn’trememberbeinginthecarwhenhisparentshaddied. Sometimes,whenhestrainedhismemoryduringlonghoursinhiscupboard, hecameupwithastrangevision:ablindingflashofgreenlightandaburningpainonhisforehead. This,hesupposed,wasthecrash,thoughhecouldn’timaginewhereallthegreenlightcamefrom. Hecouldn’trememberhisparentsatall. Hisauntanduncleneverspokeaboutthem, andofcoursehewasforbiddentoaskquestions. Therewerenophotographsoftheminthehouse.
Whenhehadbeenyounger,Harryhaddreamedanddreamedofsomeunknownrelationcomingtotakehimaway, butithadneverhappened; theDursleyswerehisonlyfamily.
