Harrythoughtthebloodseemedtobegettingthicker. Thereweresplashesontherootsofatree,asthoughthepoorcreaturehadbeenthrashingaroundinpaincloseby. Harrycouldseeaclearingahead,throughthetangledbranchesofanancientoak.
"Look—"hemurmured,holdingouthisarmtostopMalfoy.
Somethingbrightwhitewasgleamingontheground. Theyinchedcloser.
Itwastheunicornallright,anditwasdead. Harryhadneverseenanythingsobeautifulandsad. Itslong,slenderlegswerestuckoutatoddangleswhereithadfallenanditsmanewasspreadpearly-whiteonthedarkleaves.
Harryhadtakenonesteptowarditwhenaslitheringsoundmadehimfreezewherehestood. Abushontheedgeoftheclearingquivered...Then,outoftheshadows,ahoodedfigurecamecrawlingacrossthegroundlikesomestalkingbeast. Harry,Malfoy,andFangstoodtransfixed. Thecloakedfigurereachedtheunicorn,lowereditsheadoverthewoundintheanimal’sside,andbegantodrinkitsblood.
"AAAAAAAAAARGH!"
Malfoyletoutaterriblescreamandbolted—sodidFang. ThehoodedfigureraiseditsheadandlookedrightatHarry—unicornbloodwasdribblingdownitsfront. ItgottoitsfeetandcameswiftlytowardHarry—hecouldn’tmoveforfear.
Thenapainlikehe’dneverfeltbeforepiercedhishead;itwasasthoughhisscarwereonfire.
