Atthree-thirtythatafternoon,Harry,Ron,andtheotherGryffindorshurrieddownthefrontstepsontothegroundsfortheirfirstflyinglesson. Itwasaclear,breezyday,andthegrassrippledundertheirfeetastheymarcheddowntheslopinglawnstowardasmooth,flatlawnontheoppositesideofthegroundstotheforbiddenforest,whosetreeswereswayingdarklyinthedistance.
TheSlytherinswerealreadythere,andsoweretwentybroomstickslyinginneatlinesontheground. HarryhadheardFredandGeorgeWeasleycomplainabouttheschoolbrooms,sayingthatsomeofthemstartedtovibrateifyouflewtoohigh,oralwaysflewslightlytotheleft.
Theirteacher,MadamHooch,arrived.Shehadshort,grayhair,andyelloweyeslikeahawk.
"Well,whatareyouallwaitingfor?"shebarked. "Everyonestandbyabroomstick.Comeon,hurryup."
Harryglanceddownathisbroom.Itwasoldandsomeofthetwigsstuckoutatoddangles.
