           Langdoncollapsedonthefloorashundredsofpoundsteeteredtowardhim.Gravityovercamefriction,andthelidwasthefirsttogo,slidingoffthetombandcrashingtothefloorbesidehim.Thecasketcamenext,rollingoffitssupportsandtopplingupsidedowntowardLangdon.

           Astheboxrolled,Langdonknewhewouldeitherbeentombedinthehollowbeneathitorcrushedbyoneoftheedges.Pullinginhislegsandhead,Langdoncompactedhisbodyandyankedhisarmstohissides.Thenheclosedhiseyesandawaitedthesickeningcrush.

           Whenitcame,theentirefloorshookbeneathhim.Theupperrimlandedonlymillimetersfromthetopofhishead,rattlinghisteethintheirsockets.Hisrightarm,whichLangdonhadbeencertainwouldbecrushed,miraculouslystillfeltintact.Heopenedhiseyestoseeashaftoflight.Therightrimofthecaskethadnotfallenallthewaytothefloorandwasstillproppedpartiallyonitssupports.Directlyoverhead,though,Langdonfoundhimselfstaringquiteliterallyintothefaceofdeath.

           Theoriginaloccupantofthetombwassuspendedabovehim,havingadhered,asdecayingbodiesoftendid,tothebottomofthecasket.Theskeletonhoveredamoment,likeatentativelover,andthenwithastickycrackling,itsuccumbedtogravityandpeeledaway.Thecarcassrusheddowntoembracehim,rainingputridbonesanddustintoLangdon’seyesandmouth.
