           MaximilianKohler,directorgeneralofCERN,wasknownbehindhisbackasKönig—King.Itwasatitlemoreoffearthanreverenceforthefigurewhoruledoverhisdominionfromawheelchairthrone.Althoughfewknewhimpersonally,thehorrificstoryofhowhehadbeencrippledwasloreatCERN,andtherewerefewtherewhoblamedhimforhisbitterness…norforhissworndedicationtopurescience.

           LangdonfollowedthroughamechanicaldoorintoCERN’svoluminousmainlobby.

           TheGlassCathedral,Langdonmused,gazingupwardtowardheaven.

           Overhead,thebluishglassroofshimmeredintheafternoonsun,castingraysofgeometricpatternsintheairandgivingtheroomasenseofgrandeur.Angularshadowsfelllikeveinsacrossthewhitetiledwallsanddowntothemarblefloors.Theairsmelledclean,sterile.Ahandfulofscientistsmovedbrisklyabout,theirfootstepsechoingintheresonantspace.

           "Thisway,please,Mr.Langdon."Hisvoicesoundedalmostcomputerized.Hisaccentwasrigidandprecise,likehissternfeatures.KohlercoughedandwipedhismouthonawhitehandkerchiefashefixedhisdeadgrayeyesonLangdon.
