           Langdon’saversiontoclosedspaceswasbynomeansdebilitating,butithadalwaysfrustratedhim.Itmanifesteditselfinsubtleways.Heavoidedenclosedsportslikeracquetballorsquash,andhehadgladlypaidasmallfortuneforhisairy,high-ceilingedVictorianhomeeventhougheconomicalfacultyhousingwasreadilyavailable.Langdonhadoftensuspectedhisattractiontotheartworldasayoungboysprangfromhisloveofmuseums’wideopenspaces.

           Theenginesroaredtolifebeneathhim,sendingadeepshudderthroughthehull.Langdonswallowedhardandwaited.Hefelttheplanestarttaxiing.Piped-incountrymusicbeganplayingquietlyoverhead.

           Aphoneonthewallbesidehimbeepedtwice.Langdonliftedthereceiver.

           "Hello?"

           "Comfortable,Mr.Langdon?"

           "Notatall."

           "Justrelax.We’llbethereinanhour."

           "Andwhereexactlyisthere?"Langdonasked,realizinghehadnoideawherehewasheaded.
