FrankHerbert’slifereachedacrescendointheyearsafter1957,whenhefocusedhisunusualexperiencesandknowledgeoncreatinghisgreatnovel.InthemassivepilesofbookshereadtoresearchDune,herecalledreadingsomewherethatecologywasthescienceofunderstandingconsequences.Thiswasnothisoriginalconcept,butashelearnedfromEzraPound,he“madeitnew”andputitinaformthatwaspalatabletomillionsofpeople.WithaworldviewsimilartothatofanAmericanIndian,Dadsawwesternmaninflictinghimselfontheenvironment,notlivinginharmonywithit.
DespitealltheworkDunerequired,myfathersaiditwashisfavoritebooktowrite.Heusedwhathecalleda“techniqueofenormousdetail,”inwhichhestudiedandpreparednotesoverafouryearperiod,between1957and1961,thenwroteandrewrotethebookbetween1961and1965.
AsDadexpandedandcontractedthemanuscript,dependinguponwhicheditorwasgivinghimadvice,anerrorfounditswayintothefinalmanuscript.
TheageofEmperorShaddamCorrinoIVisslightlyinconsistentinthenovel,butitisoneofthefewglitchesintheentireDuneseries.Thisisremarkable,consideringthefactthatFrankHerbertwrotethebooksontypewriters...morethanamillionwordswithouttheuseofacomputertokeepalloftheinformationstraight.
