GrowingupinFrankHerbert’shousehold,Ididnotunderstandhisneedforabsolutesilencesothathecouldconcentrate,theintensedesirehehadtocompletehisimportantwritingprojects,ortheconfidencehehadthatonedayhiswritingwouldbeasuccess,despitethesteadystreamofrejectionsthathereceived.Tomyyoungeyes,thecharactershecreatedinDuneandhisotherstorieswerethechildrenofhismind,andtheycompetedwithmeforhisaffections.Intheyearsittookhimtowritehismagnumopus,hespentmoretimewithPaulAtreidesthanhedidwithme.Dad’sstudywasoff-limitstome,tomysisterPenny,andtomybrotherBruce.Inthosedays,onlymymotherBeverlyreallyunderstoodDad’scomplexities.Ultimately,itwasthroughherloveforhim,andthelovehegavebacktoher,thatIcametoseethenurturing,lovingsideoftheman.
