“Somegroundcarsaremovingtowardthesouthwall,”themanatthetelescopesaid.“Someareusingprojectileweapons,testing.Ourpeopleareusingbodyshieldsasyoucommanded.Thegroundcarshavestopped.”
Intheabruptsilence,Paulheardthewinddevilsplayingoverhead—thefrontofthestorm.Sandbegantodriftdownintotheirbowlthroughgapsinthecover.
Aburstofwindcaughtthecover,whippeditaway.
PaulmotionedhisFedaykintotakeshelter,crossedtothemenatthecommunicationsequipmentnearthetunnelmouth.Gurneystayedbesidehim.
Paulcrouchedoverthesignalmen.
Onesaid:“Agreat-great-greatgrandmotherofastorm,Muad’Dib.”
Paulglancedupatthedarkeningsky,said:“Gurney,havethesouthwallobserverspulledout.”Hehadtorepeathisorder,shoutingabovethegrowingnoiseofthestorm.
Gurneyturnedtoobey.
Paulfastenedhisfacefilter,tightenedthestillsuithood.
Gurneyreturned.
Paultouchedhisshoulder,pointedtotheblasttriggersetintothetunnelmouthbeyondthesignalmen.Gurneywentintothetunnel,stoppedthere,onehandatthetrigger,hisgazeonPaul.
“Wearegettingnomessages,”thesignalmanbesidePaulsaid.“Muchstatic.”
Paulnodded,kepthiseyeonthetime-standarddialinfrontofthesignalman.
Presently,PaullookedatGurney,raisedahand,returnedhisattentiontothedial.
