Thosewhohadbeeninonthenightstartedtellingaboutitwithakindofquietprideandwonder,thewaypeopletellaboutseeingabighotelfireoradambursting—verysolemnandrespectfulbecausethecasualtiesaren’tevencountedyet—butthelongerthetellingwenton,thelesssolemnthefellowsgot.EverytimetheBigNurseandherhustlingblackboysturnedupsomethingnew,suchastheemptybottleofcoughsyruporthefleetofwheelchairsparkedattheendofthehalllikeemptyridesinanamusementpark,itbroughtanotherpartofthenightbacksuddenandcleartobetoldtotheguyswhoweren’tinonitandtobesavoredbytheguyswhowere.Everybodyhadbeenherdedintothedayroombytheblackboys,ChronicsandAcutesalike,millingtogetherinexcitedconfusion.ThetwooldVegetablessatsunkintheirbedding,snappingtheireyesandtheirgums.EverybodywasstillinpajamasandslippersexceptMcMurphyandthegirl;shewasdressed,exceptforhershoesandthenylonstockings,whichnowhungoverhershoulder,andhewasinhisblackshortswiththewhitewhales.Theyweresittingtogetheronasofa,holdinghands.Thegirlhaddozedoffagain,andMcMurphywasleaningagainstherwithasatisfiedandsleepygrin.
Oursolemnworrywasgivingway,inspiteofus,tojoyandhumor.WhenthenursefoundthepileofpillsHardinghadsprinkledonSefeltandthegirl,westartedtopopandsnorttokeepfromlaughing,andbythetimetheyfoundMr.
