Hisvisitorsmighthaveobserved,too,thegreenflagwhichflewfromthemasthead. Ifso,theywouldperhapshavenotedthatthewhitehoofandhornwithwhichithadpreviouslybeenmarkedhadnowbeenremoved. Itwouldbeaplaingreenflagfromnowonwards.

Therewasthesameheartycheeringasbefore,andthemugswereemptiedtothedregs. Butastheanimalsoutsidegazedatthescene,itseemedtothemthatsomestrangethingwashappening. Whatwasitthathadalteredinthefacesofthepigs? Clover’solddimeyesflittedfromonefacetoanother. Someofthemhadfivechins,somehadfour,somehadthree. Butwhatwasitthatseemedtobemeltingandchanging? Then,theapplausehavingcometoanend,thecompanytookuptheircardsandcontinuedthegamethathadbeeninterrupted,andtheanimalscreptsilentlyaway.
Buttheyhadnotgonetwentyyardswhentheystoppedshort. Anuproarofvoiceswascomingfromthefarmhouse. Theyrushedbackandlookedthroughthewindowagain.
