           InthisemergencytheGovernorexertedhimselftotheutmost,andthankstothelargely-extrapaythatwasoffered,CaptainLenGuyprocuredhisfulltaleofseamen.Ninerecruitssignedarticlesforthedurationofthecampaign,whichcouldnotbefixedbeforehand,butwasnottoextendbeyondTsalalIsland.

           Thecrew,countingeverymanonboardexceptmyself,numberedthirty-one,andathirty-secondforwhomIbespeakespecialattention.Ontheeveofourdeparture,CaptainLenGuywasaccostedattheangleoftheportbyanindividualwhomherecognizedasasailorbyhisclothes,hiswalk,andhisspeech.

           Thisindividualsaid,inaroughandhardlyintelligiblevoice,—

           “Captain,Ihavetomakeaproposaltoyou.”

           “Whatisit?”

           “Haveyoustillaplace?”

           “Forasailor?”

           “Forasailor.”
