           IcouldnotestimatethepopulationoftheArchipelagoevenapproximately.Probably,itdidnotthenexceedfromtwotothreehundredsouls,mostlyEnglish,withsomeIndians,Portuguese,Spaniards,GauchefromtheArgentinePampas,andnativesfromTierDelFuel.Ontheotherhand,therepresentativesoftheovineandbovineracesweretobecountedbytensofthousands.Morethanfivehundredthousandsheepyieldoverfourhundredthousanddollars’worthofwoolyearly.Therearealsohornedcattlebredontheislands;theseseemtohaveincreasedinsize,whiletheotherquadrupeds,forinstance,horses,pigs,andrabbits,havedecreased.Alltheseliveinawildstate,andtheonlybeastofpreyisthedog-fox,aspeciespeculiartothefaunaoftheFalklands.

           Notwithoutreasonhasthisislandbeencalled“acattlefarm.
