           Idesiretolayspecialstressonthefactthatnotasinglescrapofironenteredintotheconstructionofthisboat,notsomuchasanailorabolt,forthatmetalwasentirelyunknowntotheTsalalislanders.Theplankswereboundtogetherbyasortofliana,orcreeping-plant,andcaulkedwithmosssteepedinpitch,whichwasturnedbycontactwiththesea-watertoasubstanceashardasmetal.

           Ihavenothingspecialtorecordduringtheweekthatsucceededourdeparture.Thebreezeblewsteadilyfromthesouth,andwedidnotmeetwithanyunfavourablecurrentbetweenthebanksoftheJaneSound.

           Duringthosefirsteightdays,theParacuta,bypaddlingwhenthewindfell,hadkeptupthespeedthatwasindispensableforourreachingthePacificOceanwithinashorttime.
