           Thereweretwocomfortablechairsandatableforbooksandmagazinesandweplayedcardsonthedining-tablewhenitwasclearedaway.Mr.andMrs.Guttingenliveddownstairsandwewouldhearthemtalkingsometimesintheeveningandtheywereveryhappytogethertoo.Hehadbeenaheadwaiterandshehadworkedasmaidinthesamehotelandtheyhadsavedtheirmoneytobuythisplace.Theyhadasonwhowasstudyingtobeaheadwaiter.HewasatahotelinZurich.Downstairstherewasaparlorwheretheysoldwineandbeer,andsometimesintheeveningwewouldhearcartsstopoutsideontheroadandmencomeupthestepstogointheparlortodrinkwine.

           Therewasaboxofwoodinthehalloutsidetheliving-roomandIkeptupthefirefromit.Butwedidnotstayupverylate.WewenttobedinthedarkinthebigbedroomandwhenIwasundressedIopenedthewindowsandsawthenightandthecoldstarsandthepinetreesbelowthewindowandthengotintobedasfastasIcould.Itwaslovelyinbedwiththeairsocoldandclearandthenightoutsidethewindow.WesleptwellandifIwokeinthenightIknewitwasfromonlyonecauseandIwouldshiftthefeatherbedover,verysoftlysothatCatherinewouldnotbewakenedandthengobacktosleepagain,warmandwiththenewlightnessofthincovers.Thewarseemedasfarawayasthefootballgamesofsomeoneelse’scollege.ButIknewfromthepapersthattheywerestillfightinginthemountainsbecausethesnowwouldnotcome.
