Myfriendwasanenthusiasticmusician,beinghimselfnotonlyaverycapableperformerbutacomposerofnoordinarymerit. Alltheafternoonhesatinthestallswrappedinthemostperfecthappiness,gentlywavinghislong,thinfingersintimetothemusic,whilehisgentlysmilingfaceandhislanguid,dreamyeyeswereasunlikethoseofHolmes,thesleuth-hound,Holmestherelentless,keen-witted,ready-handedcriminalagent,asitwaspossibletoconceive. Inhissingularcharacterthedualnaturealternatelyasserteditself,andhisextremeexactnessandastutenessrepresented,asIhaveoftenthought,thereactionagainstthepoeticandcontemplativemoodwhichoccasionallypredominatedinhim. Theswingofhisnaturetookhimfromextremelanguortodevouringenergy; and,asIknewwell,hewasneversotrulyformidableaswhen,fordaysonend,hehadbeenlounginginhisarmchairamidhisimprovisationsandhisblack-lettereditions.
