"Well,atleast,"saidHolmes,"youhavehadyourrevengeuponthem. Therecanbenoquestionthatitwasyouroil-lampwhich,whenitwascrushedinthepress,setfiretothewoodenwalls,thoughnodoubttheyweretooexcitedinthechaseafteryoutoobserveitatthetime. Nowkeepyoureyesopeninthiscrowdforyourfriendsoflastnight,thoughIverymuchfearthattheyareagoodhundredmilesoffbynow."
AndHolmes’sfearscametoberealized,forfromthatdaytothisnowordhaseverbeenheardeitherofthebeautifulwoman,thesinisterGerman,orthemoroseEnglishman. EarlythatmorningapeasanthadmetacartcontainingseveralpeopleandsomeverybulkyboxesdrivingrapidlyinthedirectionofReading,buttherealltracesofthefugitivesdisappeared,andevenHolmes’singenuityfailedevertodiscovertheleastclueastotheirwhereabouts.
Thefiremenhadbeenmuchperturbedatthestrangearrangementswhichtheyhadfoundwithin,andstillmoresobydiscoveringanewlyseveredhumanthumbuponawindow-sillofthesecondfloor.
