Thewallswereofwood,butthefloorconsistedofalargeirontrough,andwhenIcametoexamineitIcouldseeacrustofmetallicdepositalloverit. IhadstoopedandwasscrapingatthistoseeexactlywhatitwaswhenIheardamutteredexclamationinGermanandsawthecadaverousfaceofthecolonellookingdownatme.
