TheideaofusingaformofpoisonwhichcouldnotpossiblybediscoveredbyanychemicaltestwasjustsuchaoneaswouldoccurtoacleverandruthlessmanwhohadhadanEasterntraining. Therapiditywithwhichsuchapoisonwouldtakeeffectwouldalso,fromhispointofview,beanadvantage. Itwouldbeasharp-eyedcoroner,indeed,whocoulddistinguishthetwolittledarkpunctureswhichwouldshowwherethepoisonfangshaddonetheirwork. ThenIthoughtofthewhistle. Ofcoursehemustrecallthesnakebeforethemorninglightrevealedittothevictim. Hehadtrainedit,probablybytheuseofthemilkwhichwesaw,toreturntohimwhensummoned. Hewouldputitthroughthisventilatoratthehourthathethoughtbest,withthecertaintythatitwouldcrawldowntheropeandlandonthebed. Itmightormightnotbitetheoccupant,perhapsshemightescapeeverynightforaweek,butsoonerorlatershemustfallavictim.

Thesightofthesafe,thesaucerofmilk,andtheloopofwhipcordwereenoughtofinallydispelanydoubtswhichmayhaveremained. ThemetallicclangheardbyMissStonerwasobviouslycausedbyherstepfatherhastilyclosingthedoorofhissafeuponitsterribleoccupant.
