Thesearticles,withtwosmallwicker-workchairs,madeupallthefurnitureintheroomsaveforasquareofWiltoncarpetinthecentre. Theboardsroundandthepanellingofthewallswereofbrown,worm-eatenoak,sooldanddiscolouredthatitmayhavedatedfromtheoriginalbuildingofthehouse. Holmesdrewoneofthechairsintoacornerandsatsilent,whilehiseyestravelledroundandroundandupanddown,takingineverydetailoftheapartment.
"Wheredoesthatbellcommunicatewith?"heaskedatlastpointingtoathickbelt-ropewhichhungdownbesidethebed,thetasselactuallylyinguponthepillow.
