           Atlength,onetimehecameoutofhiscave,hespiedfaroffonthehorizon,ashiningpeakthatroseintotheskylikethetopofsometremendousiceberg;andhisvesselwasbearinghimstraighttowardsit.Asitwentonthepeakroseandrosehigherandhigherabovethehorizon;andotherpeaksroseafterit,withsharpedgesandjaggedridgesconnectingthem.Diamondthoughtthismustbetheplacehewasgoingto;andhewasright;forthemountainsroseandrose,tillhesawthelineofthecoastattheirfeetandatlengththeicebergdroveintoalittlebay,allaroundwhichwereloftyprecipiceswithsnowontheirtops,andstreaksoficedowntheirsides.Thebergfloatedslowlyuptoaprojectingrock.Diamondsteppedonshore,andwithoutlookingbehindhimbegantofollowanaturalpathwhichledwindinglytowardsthetopoftheprecipice.

           Whenhereachedit,hefoundhimselfonabroadtableofice,alongwhichhecouldwalkwithoutmuchdifficulty.Beforehim,ataconsiderabledistance,rosealoftyridgeofice,whichshotupintofantasticpinnaclesandtowersandbattlements.Theairwasverycold,andseemedsomehowdead,fortherewasnottheslightestbreathofwind.

           Inthecentreoftheridgebeforehimappearedagapliketheopeningofavalley.Butashewalkedtowardsit,gazing,andwonderingwhetherthatcouldbethewayhehadtotake,hesawthatwhathadappearedagapwastheformofawomanseatedagainsttheicefrontoftheridge,leaningforwardswithherhandsinherlap,andherhairhangingdowntotheground.
