           THEhandfeltitswayuphisarm,and,graspingitgentlyandstronglyabovetheelbow,liftedDiamondfromthebed.Themomenthewasthroughtheholeintheroof,allthewindsofheavenseemedtolayholduponhim,andbuffethimhitherandthither.Hishairblewoneway,hisnight-gownanother,hislegsthreatenedtofloatfromunderhim,andhisheadtogrowdizzywiththeswiftnessoftheinvisibleassailant.Cowering,heclungwiththeotherhandtothehugehandwhichheldhisarm,andfearinvadedhisheart.

           “Oh,NorthWind!”hemurmured,butthewordsvanishedfromhislipsashehadseenthesoap-bubblesthatbursttoosoonvanishfromthemouthofhispipe.Thewindcaughtthem,andtheywerenowhere.Theycouldn’tgetoutatall,butweretornawayandstrangled.AndyetNorthWindheardthem,andinheransweritseemedtoDiamondthatjustbecauseshewassobigandcouldnothelpit,andjustbecauseherearandhermouthmustseemtohimsodreadfullyfaraway,shespoketohimmoretenderlyandgraciouslythaneverbefore.Hervoicewaslikethebassofadeeporgan,withoutthegroaninit;likethemostdelicateofviolintoneswithoutthewailinit;likethemostgloriousoftrumpet-ejaculationswithoutthedefianceinit;likethesoundoffallingwaterwithouttheclatterandclashinit:itwaslikeallofthemandneitherofthem—allofthemwithouttheirfaults,eachofthemwithoutitspeculiarity:afterall,itwasmorelikehismother’svoicethananythingelseintheworld.
