Chapter XXXV. I Make Diamond's Acquaintance

           

           “Wouldyoubeafraidtosleepalone,Diamond?”askedhismistress.

           “Idon’tknowwhatyoumean,ma’am,”saidDiamond.“IneverwasafraidofanythingthatIcanrecollect—notmuch,atleast.”

           “There’salittleroomatthetopofthehouse—allalone,”shereturned;“perhapsyouwouldnotmindsleepingthere?”

           “Icansleepanywhere,andIlikebesttobehighup.ShouldIbeabletoseeout?”

           “Iwillshowyoutheplace,”sheanswered;andtakinghimbythehand,sheledhimupanduptheoval-windingstairinoneofthetwotowers.

           Nearthetoptheyenteredatinylittleroom,withtwowindowsfromwhichyoucouldseeoverthewholecountry.Diamondclappedhishandswithdelight.

           “Youwouldlikethisroom,then,Diamond?”saidhismistress.

           “It’sthegrandestroominthehouse,”heanswered.“Ishallbenearthestars,andyetnotfarfromthetopsofthetrees.That’sjustwhatIlike.”

           Idaresayhethought,also,thatitwouldbeaniceplaceforNorthWindtocallatinpassing;buthesaidnothingofthatsort.Belowhimspreadalakeofgreenleaves,withglimpsesofgrasshereandthereatthebottomofit.Ashelookeddown,hesawasquirrelappearsuddenly,andassuddenlyvanishamongstthetopmostbranches.

           “Aha!littlesquirrel,”hecried,“mynestisbuilthigherthanyours.”

           “Youcanbeupherewithyourbooksasmuchasyoulike,”saidhismistress.“Iwillhavealittlebellhungatthedoor,whichIcanringwhenIwantyou.Half-waydownthestairisthedrawing-room.
