           Shehadsuchalovelyshawlon,justlikerednessdippedinmilk,andallworkedoverwithflowersofthesamecolour.Itdidn’tshinemuch,itwassilk,butitkeptintheshine.Whenshecametomybedside,shesatdown,justwhereyouaresitting,Diamond,andlaidherhandonthecounterpane.Iwassittingup,withmytablebeforemereadyformytea.Herhandlookedsoprettyinitsblueglove,thatIwastemptedtostrokeit.Ithoughtshewouldn’tbeangry,foreverybodythatcomestothehospitaliskind.It’sonlyinthestreetstheyain’tkind.Butshedrewherhandaway,andIalmostcried,forIthoughtIhadbeenrude.Insteadofthat,however,itwasonlythatshedidn’tlikegivingmeherglovetostroke,forshedrewitoff,andthenlaidherhandwhereitwasbefore.Iwasn’tsure,butIventuredtoputoutmyuglyhand.”

           “Yourhandain’tugly,Nanny,”saidDiamond;butNannywenton—

           “AndIstrokeditagain,andthenshestrokedmine,—thinkofthat!Andtherewasaringonherfinger,andIlookeddowntoseewhatitwaslike.Andshedrewitoff,andputitupononeofmyfingers.Itwasaredstone,andshetoldmetheycalleditaruby.”

           “Oh,thatisfunny!”saidDiamond.“OurnewhorseiscalledRuby.We’vegotanotherhorse—aredone—suchabeauty!”

           ButNannywentonwithherstory.
